Marvellous micro-organisms addresses AC Science Understanding ACSSU094 The growth and survival of living things are affected by physical conditions of their environment, through the context of examining what microorganisms need to grow.

Marvellous micro-organisms provides students with hands-on opportunities to:

  • observe what happens when yeast is mixed with other substances
  • investigate the best conditions under which to activate yeast
  • explore the role of yeast in the bread-making process
  • observe the role of fungus in breaking down organic material

Students apply their new learning by:

  • planning and conducting an investigation into the conditions that affect the growth of mould on food

Linking science with literacy

In the Primary Connections approach, students are supported to create representations that draw on and strengthen their literacy development. In Marvellous micro-organisms, students represent and explain their understanding about how the growth and survival of living things are affected by physical conditions of their environment, by creating these representations:

  • Factual recount
  • Flow chart
  • Information text
  • Labelled diagram
  • Procedural text
  • Summary
  • Data table
  • TWLH chart
  • Word wall
