Essential energy addresses AC Science Understanding ACSSU097 Electrical energy can be transferred and transformed in electrical circuits and can be generated from a range of sources, through the context of solving a mystery in an attempt to stop a fictional evil villain from halting the production of electricity.

Essential energy provides students with hands-on opportunities to:

  • explore different types of energy and what it is used for
  • investigate how energy can be transferred from one object to another
  • investigate how energy can be transformed from one form to another
  • explore how electricity is generated

Students apply their new learning by:

  • planning and conducting an investigation of how electricity can be generated using everyday materials

Linking science with literacy

In the Primary Connections approach, students are supported to create representations that draw on and strengthen their literacy development. In Essential energy, students represent and explain their understanding about how electrical energy can be transferred and transformed in electrical circuits and can be generated from a range of sources, by creating these representations:

  • Annotated diagram
  • Factual text
  • Flow-chart
  • Glossary
  • Procedural text
  • Science chat-board
  • Data table
  • Word wall
