Recently, education students from SCU were offered the opportunity to participate in a two-day PrimaryConnections workshop on the Gold Coast.

PrimaryConnections is the education arm of the Australian Academy of Science and is an educational program used in a large number of primary schools across the country. This professional learning is highly regarded by potential employers and provides students with added confidence in the teaching and learning of science and technology.

PrimaryConnections is designed to support teachers 'in facilitating students' developing science conceptual understanding. The program uses the social constructivist approach to teaching, focusing on the 5Es (Bybee, 1997). Research by Dr Keith Skamp of SCU in 2012 demonstrated the success of this theoretical framework in promoting authentic student-centred, inquiry-based science learning environments.

The event was organised by Dr Sue Hudson, Dr Marianne Logan and Ms Simone Lewis with over 60 students from 3rd and 4th year involved in completing the highly effective and successful workshop. The students participated in a range of practical, hands-on activities during the two-day intensive workshop.

PrimaryConnections facilitators Mrs Louise Rostron and Ms Simone Lewis were impressed with the high level of student engagement, maturity and knowledge shown by the SCU students. The Australian Government funded this professional learning opportunity.
